The Ras Al Khaimah Police have foiled the attempt of a gang to sell fake bills totalling $1.5 million.
"The four-member gang was nabbed by the Criminal Investigations Department (CID), in collaboration with the Special Tasks Department, and the Organised Crime Section, with $1.5 million of $100 denomination," said Major-General Ali Abdullah bin Alwan Al Nuaimi, Commander-in-Chief of the RAK Police.
The police were alerted about the gang by an undercover agent, he added. "The gang members were put under close surveillance. We arrested them red-handed after setting a trap."
Brigadier Ghanim Ahmed Ghanim, Director-General of Police Operations, said the gang members are Arab nationals. "The gang was planning to sell the fake money to a buyer, who was actually an undercover agent in Ras Al Khaimah."
Major Mohamed bin Abdullah Al Qasimi, acting manager of the CID, said the gang was planning to sell the fake bills for Dh1 million.
The gang claimed that the original value of the fake bills was Dh5.5 million, but they just wanted to sell it to anyone as soon as possible.
"An undercover officer reached out to the gang and offered to buy all the fake bills. He agreed to meet them at a certain place, from where they were arrested later."
