According to the Abu Dhabi Police, two Asian workers were trapped in the scaffolding while they were cleaning the facade of the 23-storey structure after it started swinging heavily in the strong winds on Monday afternoon in Khalidiyah area.
“I saw the two workers shouting for help when the strong winds damaged the platform they were working from. However, the Civil Defence Rescue personnel were quick to save them,” said Daniel, an Indian eyewitness at the accident site.
“The workers were cleaning the facade of the building when the scaffolding swung to the wind. As the Civil Defence Directorate received information about the accident, a team was despatched to the scene and the workers were rescued by our well-trained men,” said Lt-Colonel Mohammed Ibrahim Al Ameri, Director of Emergency Management and Public Safety of the Abu Dhabi Police.
He further added the personnel rescued the workers from inside the 23rd floor of the building by breaking the glass window and reaching out to them on the scaffolding. Captain Abdullah Al Tamimi, Head of the Customer Services and Public Relations at the Civil Defence, warned construction companies against poor safety measures and said the management of the contracting company was responsible for the accident.
This year alone, four workers have fallen to death from work platforms at high-rise construction sites and four others were rescued by Civil Defence rescue operations.
Earlier this month, two Indian workers plunged to death after the cradle from where they were cleaning the windows of a tower in the Capital crashed to the ground. The accident happened while the two were cleaning the windows on the 15th floor. Both the workers died on the spot.
