A 34-year-old Bangladeshi worker was walking outside a grocery store in Dubai when two Arab students reportedly threatened him with a stun gun and took his wallet that contained cash worth Dh3,000, according to court records.
The two students, both 20 years old, have now been charged at the Dubai Court of First Instance. The incident reportedly took place at 5am on July 18.
During the investigation, the worker recounted: “A car stopped and a man stepped off. He grabbed me by the shoulder saying that he is a Criminal Investigation Department (CID) officer. He accused me of selling cigarettes.”
The worker recalled how he was then forced inside the back seat of their car. “That man sat by my side while holding a stun gun. His accomplice was then behind the wheel and I could not see his face well because I was so scared of the man beside me.”
Then, he was allegedly told to give his wallet, mobile phone and Emirates ID.
After a five minute drive, the duo returned his ID and mobile phone and then dropped him in a residential area in Al Quoz, the complainant said. He then took note of the car’s plate number and filed a complaint at Bur Dubai police station.
He recognised one of the suspects at the police station.
A police sergeant said the main accused admitted to having forced the worker to get inside the car while posing as a CID officer. The defendant then used a stun gun on the complainant to make him surrender his wallet.
He also handed over the stun gun to the police. An amount of Dh925, which was taken from the complainant, was also found in his possession, the police said.
The accused’s accomplice confessed that they had stopped other workers on that day but did not find any money with them. They took the worker’s money then dropped him off after accusing him of having stolen that big amount (Dh3,000).
The court will pronounce a ruling on November 18.
