Three Pakistani men admitted in the Court of First Instance on Wednesday to have stolen electric cables, worth Dh 6,000, from an under-construction mosque site.
Prosecution records show the three men, including a 25-year-old businessman, a driver, 26, and a labourer, 25, stole, with a fourth runaway accomplice, the cables after physically assaulting and threatening the site guard with a knife.
The incident was reported on May 13 to Al Muraqqabat police.
The Indian guard said that he worked at the construction site that belonged to a contracting company in Al Mamzar.
"At 1 am, I was sleeping near the site when four men came to me. One of them put a knife on my neck and threatened to kill me if I made any move. He also slapped me," the 44-year-old guard said.
The thieves transported the guard behind a portacabin (the site office) after tying his hands up, blindfolding and gagging him.
After about one hour, the guard managed to untie himself. "I called my colleague and when he came we looked around the site," he added.
The two guards found that 60 cables, estimated at Dh 6,000, were stolen.
The guard identified two accused at the police station; one of them was the one who threatened him with a knife.
The police arrested the businessman at 3 pm on May 29 in Sharjah Industrial area.
"We investigated the incident after we received the complaint. We learnt that two men were covering their faces when they attacked the guard. We found out later that the first accused (the businessman) was involved in the theft. He told us after his arrest that they sold the cables to a Bangladeshi man the next day for Dh 9,700," a police corporal said.
The businessman told the police he collected Dh 2,500 and admitted he spent it. Only Dh 300 was recovered from him. The two other accused were also apprehended in Sharjah Industrial area. Only Dh 595 was found with them.
A ruling is expected on October 26.
