A man died and four others were injured when a ship caught fire in the high sea, four nautical miles off Sharjah territorial waters.

The police was alerted on Monday at 8.40 am by a seaman, who said a fire had broken out in the high sea with crew on board.

Police patrols, maritime rescue teams, ambulance, coast guards, crime scene teams and the air wing were immediately deployed to the sea.

The injured were rushed to Kuwait Hospital with moderate to serious injuries.

Major Ali Al Naqabi, officer on duty at Al Haira Police Station in Sharjah, said the ship was four nautical miles off the territorial waters of Sharjah, and suspected that the vessel was carrying flammable substances.

Investigations are on to detect the cause of fire.

“Coast guards have fixed warning signs where the vessel sank," he added.
