Dubai - Three children, aged two to four years, narrowly escaped death after the majlis extension outside their home in Dubai caught fire as they played with matchsticks and a cigarette. The children reportedly lit a cigarette left behind by the elders and threw it on the carpet, which caught fire. Soon, the whole Majlis was up in flames.
Ahmed Mohammed Ali, Head of criminal engineering at the Department of Forensics, said the children’s family noticed thick smoke billowing from the Majlis, following which they called the Dubai Civil Defence.
Firefighters rushed to the spot and managed to rescue the children after breaking open the Majlis’s door.
Ali said four fires in Dubai were caused by smoking cigarettes and shisha last year. The blaze reported in Torch tower in Dubai Marina recently also was caused due to smoking.
He urged residents to refrain from smoking indoors.
Meanwhile, the Dubai Civil Defence announced on its Twitter page that a huge fire erupted in a warehouse in Ras Al Khor. Three fire brigades were rushed to site and the fire was brought under control before it could spread to other warehouses in the area. No casualties were reported in the incident.
