Convicts with a certain criteria can now benefit from electronic surveillance tags, according to the police.
"The police have activated electronic monitoring to complement judicial rulings issued by the courts and other judicial authorities. If the sentence does not exceed two years or those who have been sentenced between two and five years and have completed half of their sentence term can avail of the benefit of the e-tag system. The Sharjah Police are committed to achieving the strategic goals of the MoI, aimed at ensuring all administrative services are implemented as per quality, efficiency and transparency standards," Major-General Saif Al Zeri Al Shamsi, Commander-in-Chief of the Sharjah Police, told Khaleej Times.
The Sharjah Police have begun the implementation of digital surveillance tags to minor offenders from Wednesday. The move was implemented as part of the directives of His Highness Sheikh Saif bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of the Interior (MoI) to achieve the vision and aspirations of UAE leadership.
"Implementing the digital surveillance tag system will a qualitative shift in the concept of punitive and corrective policies and the mechanism for applying the penalties issued to the convicts in criminal cases. Monitoring the convict through electronic anklets would guarantee the implementation of the penalties without damage to the life of the convict and his family. This would reflect positively in the social and economic aspects of the state," added Maj-Gen Al Shamsi.
