A man has gone on trial at the Dubai Court of First Instance for allegedly extorting cash from his ex-fiancee and blackmailing her.
Court documents show that the 34-year-old Emirati man started blackmailing his ex-fiancee since 2016 via Snapchat and WhatsApp when she got engaged to another man. He coerced her into paying him Dh20,000 after threatening to circulate her private photos and disgrace her within her family.
He also verbally abused her in WhatsApp messages.
Public prosecution referred him to trial on charges, including issuing threats, blackmail, extortion and insult.
A complaint was lodged in December last year at Al Qusais police station.
The complainant, a 25-year-old Emirati, said that the defendant sent her messages that read: 'leave your fiancé or I would circulate your photos'.
"In 2015, he proposed to me and we got engaged. But we cancelled the engagement later. However, we kept contact via phone calls."
She told the prosecutor that when she got engaged to another man, the accused asked her to break up with her new fiancé and get back to him. "I refused to do so. I then began receiving messages with threats from foreign numbers.
"I even asked the accused for advice to see who was sending those messages as he is kind of familiar with such technical stuff."
She recounted that it was like that until she found out that he (the defendant) was the sender of those messages. She also claimed that he called her names in WhatsApp messages.
The woman added that the accused made her pay him Dh20,000 for not circulating her photos.
During police interrogation and public prosecution investigation, the defendant admitted to the charges.
The case file includes copies of the relevant conversations between the two.
The trial has been adjourned to February 18.
