A 29-year-old man stood trial at the Dubai Court of First Instance on the charge of molesting an 11-year-old girl inside a supermarket.
Public prosecution records show that the incident took place on April 4 this year when the Moroccan tailor groped the girl who was then alone and also purposely stood very close behind her in a way to touch her in a store in Freej Al Murar in Naif.
The man denied the charge in court. He has been placed in detention.
During the police interrogation, the girl, a student, recounted that she was at the supermarket at 7.30pm when the defendant approached her. He hugged her quickly and touched her inappropriately more than once.
She went back home and told her aunt about him. The aunt then reported the matter to the police.
The girl's father, a businessman, said he was outside the country when the incident took place. He learned his daughter cried as she was telling her aunt about it.
A police sergeant said they arrested the accused at 8pm on April 6 after receiving the complaint. "The supermarket surveillance cameras captured the defendant molesting the victim."
The officer told the prosecutor that the tailor admitted to the charge, claiming that he did a mistake.
A ruling will be pronounced on May 28.
