A Pakistani man has been sentenced to six months in jail for filming his flatmate in the shower and sharing the clip on WhatsApp.
The victim, who is also a Pakistani national, knew about it only when he received the video clip from his friends back home.
The 30-year-old convict, a carpet cleaner, denied the charges of sexual assault and invasion of privacy at the Dubai Court of First Instance. However, the court found him guilty and ordered his deportation. His mobile phone was also confiscated.
According to public prosecution records, the man hid his phone in the bathroom of their flat in Al Satwa and put it on video mode to record the victim in the shower.
The 22-year-old victim said the man borrowed money from his friends in December last year. "I was not happy with that, so I told him about my intention to move out. He got upset and threatened that I would regret it. But I left the accommodation," he said.
A few days later, he received the WhatsApp video clips of him taking a shower, coming from several people outside the UAE.
"They told me the defendant had sent the clips to them. I complained immediately at Bur Dubai police station," he told the prosecutor.
He also said he had no prior disputes with the defendant, except that time when he told him he would be moving out.
"I felt embarrassed and ashamed after the clips were circulated. I was unaware of what he did until I received the videos," the victim said.
A police lieutenant said the man admitted to filming his flatmate after an argument over money and residency payments.
"But he claimed he did not send it to anyone and that someone used his phone and shared the clip with others in Pakistan," the lieutenant said.
The police found the clip on the man's phone, along with four other inappropriate videos of children.
The ruling can be appealed.
