An estranged husband went on trial in absentia at the Dubai Court of First Instance on multiple charges, including blasphemy. Public prosecution records show that the Jordanian man, a fugitive, sent WhatsApp messages that insulted Islam. He did this while allegedly threatening his wife.
He threatened to burn her and her brothers in a "carnage". The case dates back to April 29 and was registered at Al Rashidiya police station.
The defendant was referred to court pursuant to the anti-discriminatory and hate law and provisions of the Federal Penal Code.
The complainant, the defendant's wife, a 30-year-old employee, said during the prosecution investigation that she was at her place when she received messages from the accused. "He verbally abused me, my parents and family in those messages sent from his Jordan number."
She also claimed the messages were blasphemous. Copies of the messages were enclosed to the case file by the investigator.
The husband will be sentenced on December 31.
