A British man, who assaulted an on-duty police officer at the Dubai International Airport, was sentenced to three months in jail on Thursday.
According to the public prosecution records, the 37-year-old man on a visit visa, behaved aggressively with the officer. He stepped on his foot and pushed him.
The Dubai Court of First Instance found him guilty of assaulting, threatening and verbally abusing an on-duty police officer, committing an indecent act in public, using technology to breach others' privacy and consuming alcohol without a licence.
It ordered his deportation. The incident took place on July 14.
The defendant's confrontation with the police officer followed an earlier problem he had with an airline's Indian employee, to whom he made threats.
He told the latter that he was British and he could have him lose his job and deport him to his home country.
He also flashed his finger. The accused also filmed that employee and other staff and travellers. He was then under the influence of alcohol.
The police officer said during public prosecution investigation: "I was on duty at 7am on July 14 at Terminal 3 when I was alerted about a problem at a gate of a plane bound for Britain.
I went there and saw the accused was screaming and insulting the staff and in a state of rage. As
I approached him and introduced myself, he insulted me and then stepped on my right foot and pushed me back with both his hands.
He then told me he is British and could cause me trouble and would smash my face. He then took his mobile phone out and began filming the staff and travellers at the gate."
The verdict remains subject to appeal by the accused and the public prosecution.
