The Appeal Court in Abu Dhabi has reduced a 26-year-old expat's jail term from five years to three years for causing the death of his girlfriend, who died of drug overdose.
He was also given another six months in jail for possessing drugs.
Court documents stated that the woman was found dead inside her car that was parked near her workplace.
The woman had decided to end her life by consuming a lot of drugs after the man allegedly told her that their relationship was over. Police investigations had revealed that the drugs had been provided to the woman by the man before he dumped her.
The incident occurred during Ramadan last year.
A police forensic report said she died of drug overdose. She consumed a huge quantity of prigaphaline and methamphetamine and other narcotics, according to authorities.
Prosecutors said the drugs had been earlier provided to her by the defendant, who is also an addict, when they were still in love.
The police then arrested the man and he was prosecuted.
He had drugs in his possession while he was arrested. His urine samples also tested positive to drugs.
According to the police, the Iranian had volunteered to work for the same organisation where the woman worked and he was under her supervision.
The pair later fell in love. After a while, the man sent the Arab woman e-mails informing her that their relationship was over. This troubled her as she was crazily in love with the man.
Prosecutors also presented the details of the emails and text messages the couple had exchanged after falling out, which prompted the woman to commit suicide.
The man will be deported after serving his jail sentence.
