Sharjah Central Region Police arrested a Pakistani gang for stealing backup batteries and cables in 30 wireless strengthening plants in various areas of the emirate.
The theft recently caused massively disrupted Etisalat services in Sharjah.
Following complaints from Etisalat, police managed to arrest the gang members and buyers of the stolen wires and cables.
Major Abdullah Al Mulaih, Director of the CID Section at the Sharjah Central Region Police said that following the complaints from Etistalat, police formed a team to investigate the case and find the culprits.
During investigation, police discovered a scrap shop located in Al Dhaid that was selling a large number of cables and backup batteries.
When the officers interrogated the owner of the shop, he said that the batteries belonged to a Bangladeshi man who rented part of his shop to use it as storage. Further investigations revealed that the man was not Bangladeshi, but a Pakistani national who is living illegally in the country.
They arrested the owner of the scrap shop as well as others who confessed to the crime.
The suspects told the police that they were aided by a computer operator and network technician - allegedly working for an Etisalat subcontracting company. They had become incriminated by providing the suspects with information about the locations of the Etisalat plants.
Two of the suspects confessed that they stole cables and batteries to sell them.
They have been referred to public prosecution.
