Five Sri Lankan men, who allegedly broke into a villa and robbed jewellery, valuables and cash, worth more than Dh50,000, stood trial in the Court of First Instance on Monday.
Public prosecutions records show the five men, aged between 29 and 49, forced their way into the villa in Mirdif area after breaking the locks. They got away with Dh15,000 in cash and jewellery - a golden and diamond necklace, three golden earrings, golden pins, two watches and two wallets.
"On July 8, 2016, I was out of the UAE on my annual leave, and three days later, I received a phone call from my villa gardener. He asked whether I had left the main door open and if I had left a chair outside," the 50-year-old Pakistani complainant, a professor, said.
"I told my nephew, who lived in Ajman, to check on the villa. He then informed me that the villa had been burglarised. He found the place in all mess and the doors were broken.
"I came back five days later and found that our gold and diamond jewellery was missing. The stolen valuables were worth Dh50,000."
A police corporal said they nabbed two of the accused in Sharjah on July 18, 2016. The two thieves then led the police to the whereabouts of the other accomplices.
All the defendants admitted to the robbery charge during the investigation.
