Four men are standing trial at the Dubai Court of First Instance on the charge of robbing a worker of 3 million Saudi riyals (Dh2,938,000).
Public prosecution records show that the incident took place on June 27 when the Pakistani complainant had just got inside his truck in Jebel Ali.
The four defendants, all Pakistanis in their 30s, including two runaways, took the complainant off guard while pepper spraying him and robbing him of cash.
A fifth Pakistani, a 43-year-old, is accused of possessing 404,000 Saudi riyals (Dh395,000) of the stolen amount.
A lieutenant said that around 4am on July 26, the police were alerted about a robbery incident in Dubai Investment Park. "We heard from the complainant that the thieves attacked him with pepper spray and took the cash from under the back seat in his truck while he parked near the main street."
With the help of informants, the police tracked down two suspects on July 16. "The two men admitted to the robbery charge together with two others. One of them led us to an accomplice with whom they kept part of the money. The latter was arrested in the Chinese cluster," the lieutenant told the prosecutor.
The police recovered 404,000 Saudi riyals from the place of that accomplice. He confessed he was aware the amount was stolen and that the two men were about to flee the country and had asked him to wire the money to them later.
The trial will continue on November 3.
