A soldier has been charged with injuring a police officer after he intentionally drove his car into him. He committed the act when he was surrounded by policemen executing an arrest warrant against him.
The 30-year-old Emirati accused did not show up in the Court of First Instance for the first hearing of his trial on Wednesday.
Prosecutors accused him of intentionally running his car into an on-duty police officer, injuring him, and damaging a public property (a police car).
The incident took place on August 21 and was reported to Al Rafaa police station.
"Around 7.30am, we were informed about a warrant Abu Dhabi police officers had to arrest the accused. We met them and they explained that the plan was to go outside a hotel and catch him," the police sergeant who got injured in the incident said.
"I went in a patrol car with a colleague and parked next to the defendant's car that was in front of a hotel.
"When he moved his car backwards to dodge arrest, I stepped outside my car and stood in front of his, but that did not stop him from driving into me. He also damaged the doors and the front side of the police car."
He managed to drive off then, but was arrested later.
A forensic report showed the police officer was left with a left knee injury and needed treatment for a certain time before full recovery.
The court will pronounce a ruling on November 29.
