A cleaner, who raped his workmate twice at storage room was sentenced to one year in jail by a Dubai court on Thursday.
Court documents show that the 28-year-old Bangladeshi man raped his Nepali colleague twice while they were alone in the storage room of the building where they worked.
He was detained after she complained against him in June at Bur Dubai police station.
The Dubai Court of First Instance found the defendant guilty of a rape charge and ordered his deportation after completing his jail term.
The complainant, a 27-year-old cleaner, told the public prosecution investigator that she saw the defendant sitting on a chair in the storage room on June 7. "I went there to return the cleaning equipment and tools. He asked me where I was."
She recounted how he stood up and got very close to her. He caught her off guard when he grabbed her right arm and pulled her closer to him. He then grabbed her by the neck forcibly. He raped her twice then left the place without talking to her or saying a word.
She was left perplexed for about one hour. "I left the room later and resumed my routine duties. When I returned to the work accommodation, I informed the Indian supervisor. She advised me to report the incident to the police," the woman said.
During police interrogation and prosecution investigation, the defendant admitted he raped the complainant.
His DNA traces were found on her body, a report from the General Directorate of Criminal Evidence and Forensics showed.
The defendant has the right to appeal the court ruling within 15 days.
