A drug addict has been cleared by a Dubai court of the charge of resisting being taken into custody by anti-narcotics police officers making routine drug check-ups.
Prosecutors accused the 20-year-old unemployed man, a Comoros Islands passport holder, of assaulting two on-duty narcotics officers.
He allegedly pushed a sergeant and kicked a lieutenant.
Apart from charges of resisting and assaulting narcotics officers, he was also accused at the Court of First Instance of using three types of narcotics. His urine sample tested positive for the drugs.
The court acquitted him of the assault charge and referred him to the Court of Misdemeanors on the drug charge.
According to the police sergeant, the incident took place on March 3, this year.
"We had earlier information on the defendant. And at 9:30 am on the incident day, we were compassing Al Wasl area when we spotted the accused whose unbalanced walk raised our suspicions."
The sergeant added, "We stopped him and told him who we are while showing our cards to him. As we ordered him to produce an ID, we noticed he was hardly able to speak and did not even smell like he was drunk. He was clearly high on drugs. He pushed me and tried to run.
"Four other officers from the narcotics division, who were with us on the job, stepped out of the car and caught him, cuffing him after forcing him to the ground. A lieutenant was then kicked by him. He still would not go inside the patrol car and kept resisting aggressively."
He was taken to the general directorate of narcotics. The database showed he had a criminal record, the sergeant said.
Later that same day and with a public prosecution warrant, the man took the drug tests.
The toxicology results report showed the man had used at least two types of narcotics.
The lieutenant gave a similar deposition.
The acquittal verdict may still be appealed by the public prosecution.
