A dental surgeon who was convicted of causing a permanent disability to a patient after a dental treatment has had his Dh5,000 fine upheld by the Federal Supreme Court.
Court documents stated that the Arab patient complained to authorities about the doctor after he experienced a persistent tingling sensation in his lower lip after a tooth treatment.
A medical report said the patient's lower lip sensation was affected by 50 percent from its original form because of a medical error.
Prosecutors had charged the doctor with medical negligence in treating the patient.
The court of first instance in a northern emirate had fined the doctor Dh30,000 after finding him guilty of causing a permanent disability to a patient because of medical negligence but the man challenged the ruling to the Appeal Court which reduced the fine to Dh5,000.
He then appealed to UAE's top court stressing that he was wrongly convicted and requesting to be cleared.
But the Supreme Court judge rejected his appeal and maintained the sentence by the appeal court.
