A policeman has been sentenced to three years in jail by the Court of First Instance for soliciting and collecting Dh 3,000 worth of bribe in return for the release of a detainee.
The officer, an Emirati, also lost his job after he was found guilty of breaching the law.
The case dates back to August 30 last year when the Emirati officer, who works for Sharjah police, was in charge of handing an Indian detainee to a police station in Dubai. But instead, he released him after collecting the money.
The court also ordered the defendant to pay a Dh3,000 as a fine.
He earlier pleaded not guilty in court to the charge of collecting a bribe.
The officer reportedly admitted in the public prosecution investigation to the charge.
He confessed that as he was transporting the 52-year-old worker from Sharjah to Dubai to hand him over, the latter began imploring him to release him. The cop then talked with the worker's son on the phone and solicited Dh3,000 to be paid for that favor, according to public prosecution records.
The worker was caught after he turned himself in to Sharjah police.
The officer was arrested and Dh 1,000 was recovered from him after he had spent the remaining amount.
The ruling remains subject to appeal.
