A guard has been charged in Dubai for the theft of over Dh83,000 worth of power cables from a construction site.
The Dubai Court of First Instance was told that the 27-year-old Pakistani guard planned the theft with another suspect. His part was to leave the site he was in charge of watching, thus enabling a group of thieves to steal 997 power cables worth Dh83,709.
The incident that took place on January 3 this year was reported to Al Barsha police station.
"I was on the job as an engineer at the site in Jumeirah the Palm Island around 7am on January 4 this year when I learned from the foreman and some workers that as many as 997 cables were missing. Their price was Dh83,709," an Arab manager said during the public prosecution investigation.
"With the absence of any break-in signs on the door leading to the site, we checked the CCTV cameras of a nearby hotel."
According to the manager, the footage showed a truck getting inside the site at 2pm on January 3. Two men stepped off the truck and they were shortly joined by four other men arriving in a car. The men were seen stealing and loading the cables on the truck.
"The defendant claimed at first that no vehicle had entered the site. But when confronted by another guard, he confessed he left the site from noon till 3pm on the day of the incident.
"The accused admitted to the CID officers that he stole the cables with other thieves and he was to get Dh9,500 for his help. He provided help by leaving the site unattended, enabling the thieves to get inside and take the cables," the manager said.
A ruling will be pronounced on February 25.
