A total of 369 motorbikes and e-scooters were impounded in two weeks for flouting traffic rules during an intensive road safety campaign carried out by the Ras Al Khaimah Police.
The motorbikes and scooters seized were creating noise at night, speeding through city streets and thoroughfares, causing nuisance and disturbing peace, pointed out Brigadier Dr Mohammed Saeed Al Humaidi, director general of the central operations, RAK Police.
"The motorbikers' groups are often packs of young men who throw traffic rules to the wind," Brig. Humaidi said.
As part of several campaigns during this year, the police have confiscated hundreds of motorbikes and e-scooters, which are mostly unregistered and driven by youngsters without a licence.
The top cop said the recent 'Eltizam' or 'Obligation' campaign shall continue to clamp down on noisy and reckless bikers and scooterists. "A number of accidents have been reported recently due to motorbikes and we have zero tolerance against the violators."
The police have also launched campaigns to raise road awareness among drivers and parents about the negative fallout of accidents and speeding, he added. "The traffic police officers also paid visits to residential areas and gave valuable advice to the public in protecting the lives of road users, curb accidents and ensure safety."
Brig. Humaid said the inspections will continue all the year round across RAK. "No vehicle shall be released before the full payment of prescribed fines at the end of the impoundment period. The seized vehicle will be released only upon the approval of the technical committee concerned."
