Sharjah - The Sharjah Police arrested 33 beggars of various nationalities since the beginning of Ramadan as part of an intensified inspection campaign under the slogan, “Make Sharjah free of beggars”.
Officers at the Criminal Investigation Department of the Sharjah Police said the beggars, including old women, men and children, are either on visit visas or are illegals.
They were arrested from mosques, residential buildings, shopping centres, streets and squares.
The police urged the public not to cooperate or encourage beggars in the country as they come here on visit visas to make easy money. “They work in an organised manner and are brought into the country by specialised gangs. With the Eid holidays approaching, the police have intensified inspections to curb these practices,” a police official said.
He called on public to call 901 or 06 5632222 or 80080 to complain about beggars in any parts of the emirate. –afkarali@khaleejtimes.com
