The gang members recently robbed a bank customer of Dh16,000 while he was coming out of the bank.
Col. Sultan Salim Al Damerky, Director of the Investigation and Search Department at the Ras Al Khaimah Police, said that they have received several complaints in various police stations about thefts targeting bank customers. The police deployed a team of CID officers in the areas where banks are situated after the complaints.
Recently, an Asian man lodged a complaint with the police that two men and a women approached him when he was going to his car after withdrawing money from his account. They told him that they had US dollars with them and needed to convert those to dirhams.
They requested him to hand them the cash to see the currency of the UAE as they are tourists and not familiar with the UAE currency. He gave them the whole amount in his hand and they returned it after checking.
However when he reached his car and checked the amount, it was found that Dh16,000 was missing from the total amount, which was not disclosed by the police.
The CID team, during the investigation, managed to detect the identities of the suspects who were using a car with a number plate of a neighbouring emirate.
The police laid a trap and arrested them red-handed. When confronted, they confessed to the crime and the case has been referred to the public prosecution.
The RAK Police have urged bank customers to be careful while dealing with cash and avoid talking to strangers after leaving the banks.
