The police tracked down the defendant, a 50-year-old man from Comoros Islands, after his fingerprints were found on a safe in the victim’s house. It was not clear when the accused was arrested in connection with the murder that happened in September 2002.
According to prosecution records, the defendant learnt that the victim, an Emirati, was a benefactor known for her constant handouts for the needy. He kept a close watch on her house in Satwa for a few days until he made sure she was alone.
He sneaked into the house and grabbed the victim by her neck for about five minutes. He dragged her from the house yard to the living room where he pushed her down. He squeezed her chest and covered her mouth with both his hands to stop her from breathing. He did not move away from her until she became motionless. The defendant tried to break-open the safe in the victim’s house but could not. He could not either carry the safe with him because it was heavy. A police officer said that when arrested, the defendant denied having anything to do with the victim’s killing. He claimed he did not come to Dubai for ten years.
But when confronted with the fact that his fingerprints were found on the victim’s safe, he confessed to the crime.
The victim’s cousin, a 64-year-old Emirati man, said that they got worried when they could not reach the victim, who lived by herself, on her residence phone number. He went to her place around midnight and found the door open. He found her body lying on the floor, the face covered with a piece of cloth.
A police major said that they found the woman lying on her left side with her face covered with a head cover. Her bedroom was in a mess and the safe was moved from its place. According to the forensic expert, the body had multiple bruises on the face, shoulder, left arm and hand and rib fractures which could have been the result of a fall from a chair or so. But he confirmed the victim was strangulated. —mary@khaleejtimes.com
