Dubai Cricket Council to resume activities

DUBAI — The Dubai Cricket Council will relaunch its cricket activities with the Mobil Cup from February 25 after a hiatus of more than five years.

The popular 25-over-a-side event will see 24 Division B teams slug it out at Sabkha ground in Dubai.

DCC chairman Abdul Rahman Falaknaz was happy with the relaunch after cricket activities had stopped due to the lack of cricket grounds. ‘‘To take care of the local cricket activities in the best way and to maintain our high standards of operations we have added new members who are like minded and love the game of cricket and have been supporting us since long.

“Shyam Bhatia who has been supporting the DCC activities and who is known for his contribution to local cricket and the under-privileged school cricketers around the world has been invited as patron member of the DCC and we look forward to his valued and continued support,’’ he said.

“We are very fortunate to have the services of vice-chairman Mohammed Redha Abbas who is a founding member of the DCC. He is the currently the chairman of the ECB Selection Committee and represents us in the Emirates Cricket Board and we pray he continues to support our cricket for many more years to come,” Falaknaz added.

The DCC have included fresh blood to rejuvenate the working committee and have included Shiva Pagrani, Shoeb Muljiani and Gopal Jasapara, who are well known names in the local cricket arena.

“Veteran cricketer Mohamed Lokhandwala who has been in the forefront of our activities and who represents DCC as a national selector has now been given additional responsibilities and has been made the joint secretary. Farrukh Siddiqui has been inducted back in DCC while Hayat Yar Khan who has spent more than three decades in the service of local cricket in Dubai and Sharjah continues as the secretary. I wish them all the success and pray DCC retains its old glory,” Falaknaz added.

The Mobil Cup tournament is open to teams and players registered with any regional cricket council in the UAE. and the registration form is available to download at www.cricketlovers.com Entry forms can be submitted to Farukh Siddiqui (0506514069) or Gopal Jasapara (0504559083) by February 20 at Jasapara Sports Shop in Karama, Dubai.

The draws will be held on February 22.
