More than 100 Malaysian expats in Dubai celebrated Hari Malaysia (Malaysia Day) with a 'unity ride' around Al Qudra Lake on Saturday.
Malaysia Day is held on September 16 every year to commemorate the establishment of the Malaysian Federation in 1963. It marked the joining together of Malaya, North Borneo and Sarawak to form what is now Malaysia. Earlier, Malaysians observed Hari Merdeka or Malaysian Independence Day, also known as Hari Kebangsaan (National day), on August 31 to celebrate Malaysia's independence from the British Empire in 1957.
According to Malaysian consul-general Dato' Yubazlan Yusof, the unity ride in Dubai, participated in by Malaysians from Malay, Chinese and Indian origin, was aimed at showing the solidarity of the Malaysian community. "Although we come from different races, kami anak Malaysia (we are children of Malaysia)," Yusof told Khaleej Times.
"I call on my compatriots to promote Malaysian 'oneness' and to be responsible residents of the UAE as we are thankful for the freedom, peace and unity that we are enjoying both in Malaysia and the UAE," Yusof added.
The Malaysian unity ride was composed of 30 cars and 10 superbikes. The contingent started from the consul general's residence in Al Barsha and drove to Al Qudra Lake.
A small reception was held after the ride at the Rumah Malaysia (Malaysia house), where mouth watering delicacies such as Nasi Lemak, Mee Goreng and traditional Malaysian snacks were prepared in the spirit of togetherness by the spouses of Malaysian diplomatic corps in Dubai.
