“It was kind of a learning experience for me. I don’t take the song being called item number as an offense. There is exposure in the song but it is more about attitude and I was specific about it. It is about dancing with openness and not being inhibited,” Katrina said.
“It has to be one of the raunchiest songs I have ever shot,” she added.
The 26-year-old actress, who portrayed a rarely seen avatar of hers in the song, said she had watched many DVDs of older films prior to doing Sheila ki Jawaani.
“Farah gave me a lot of DVDs of older movies. Not to imitate or emulate. I can never do that even if I wanted to but just to see the way Madhuriji (Dixit) dances and the joy she felt while dancing... how focused and involved she was,” Katrina said.
Tees Maar Khan, an action-comedy stars Akshay Kumar and Katrina in the lead with Akshaye Khanna in a cameo. Salman Khan and Anil Kapoor too have made special appearances in the film which is releasing on December 24.
The movie is about a ‘fearless and shameless’ criminal known as Tees Maar Khan.
“In the movie, Akshay plays the role of a conman and I play his love interest, a wannabe actress called Anya. She signs a B-grade film in which she is called Sheila,” Katrina said.
The actress said the film’s director Farah Khan, who had earlier made Main Hoon Na and Om Shanti Om, can make her heroines look glamorous in her own way, which others can’t emulate.
“I do every film for a different reason. For Raajneeti I had to experience the kind of world that Prakashji creates... the dramatic approach. Farah’s approach is to present her heroine in a glamorous way but in a particular style. It is a touch that no other director can bring,” Katrina said.
“The women in Farah’s films are very glamorous. And the highlights for me were the songs. She did not let me down. Everything from looks to what I was looking to portray far exceeded what I have done before,” she added.
