The bill also boasts another four Dubai-based acts – glam rockers Good Fryday, the mysterious Eye, the newly renamed Ground Zero (formerly 13 A.D.) and the high-energy Borrison Ivy.
“It wasn’t the typical Nervecell crowd last time we played Rock Nation, which is good because we can win people over – and scare them at the same time,” joked the band’s guitarist Barney Ribeiro about the City Times-sponsored event.
The band will headline another show the night after at Club Submarine, and already have a couple of festivals lined up for the summer in Portugal and Germany. They will also play the Dubai Desert Rock Festival on March 6 alongside international acts such as Motörhead and Chimaira.
“I would love to tell you what else is in the pipeline, but we’re just waiting for confirmation and contracts,” said Barney, adding that the band hoped to be able to make a major touring announcement in the next fortnight.
After forming in 2000, Nervecell have gone on to become one of the biggest acts in Dubai. Last year, the four-piece released their debut album Preaching Venom, which drew numerous positive reviews from publications both in the region and beyond.
Barney admitted that recording for the follow-up album was “a little difficult”, as one band member prepares to relocate to Doha and their drummer Louis lives in Australia.
“We work through the internet – we recorded the drums for Preaching Venom in Australia,” he added. “In terms of writing, the three of us who are based here write the music, programme the drums and give it to the drummer to learn his parts. He does his tracks then we come together, jam and bring it out live.
“He’s willing to do it and we’re happy with that. It’s difficult, but to be honest there’s no one in this part of the world who’s willing to either be as committed or actually can play this sort of music,” concluded Barney, adding that the second album might be released at some point next year.
In the meantime, the band are looking to sign to a major label.
“Some of the major labels like Century Media and Roadrunner Records have made appointments to catch us at some of these festivals,” said Barney. “They liked the CD, that’s the first stage, stage two is seeing how we bring the music out live.
“We feel very positive about it – there are a lot of good vibes, we just need that major label to take us on board and we’ll probably make history as the only metal band to do this and break the red tape.
“We can show that nothing’s impossible if you put your mind to it. It’s not like we feel that we’re the ambassadors, but we’ve been doing this for a long time and there’s no reason for us to stop now.”
