‘Hayavadana’ is one of the Girish Karnad’s most performed plays. It is the story of Kapila and Devadatta - is based on a tale from Somadeva’s ‘Vetalapnchavimshika’, but also draws on Thomas Mann’s reworking of the tale in ‘The Transposed Heads’. Interwoven into the main plot is the story of ‘Hayavadana’- a horse-headed man whose quest for wholeness underscores the play’s exploration of identity and reality. It has been translated and staged not only in the Indian languages but across the world for the last four decades. This play is directed by Prakash Rao Payyar -playwright, poet and stage director who has the experience of directing more than twenty five plays in Kannada.
Prominent poet, playwright, folklorist, Kannada film director and the founder Vice-Chancellor of Kannada University - Hampi, Dr.Chandrashekar Kambara will be chief guest of the award presenting ceremony. Noted poet and Honorary Secretary of Kannada Sahityaparisht Mr.Javagarhalli Shivshankar will be honoured with ‘Dhwani Puraskara - 2008’. Noted director, producer and actor Sreenivas Kappanna will be honoured with ‘Dhwani Sriranga Ranga Prashati - 2008’.
