Our love for reading is so very rarely matched by any famous celebrity. But Sonam Kapoor's passion for the written word comes across as soon as she starts speaking about the importance of going on fictional adventures.
"I feel reading has gone out of style and it needs to never go out of style. There are so many clickbait articles on social media. People don't have the patience to read anymore and that makes me very sad," The Zoya Factor actress said at the Sharjah International Book Fair (SIBF) on Saturday where she was hosting a talk session as part of the Sharjah World Book Capital's #ReadTheMovie initiative.
1. She used to steal her mother's books. After covering basics like works by Enid Blyton, the Nancy Drew and Hardy Boys series, Sonam grew up reading hardcore books like The Pelican Brief by John Grisham and Exodus, all from her mother's library. "Any sort of gravitas or depth I have is only because of the reading I did in my formative years and the reading I continue to do," she says.
2. She secretly wants to be a librarian. Sonam says if she wasn't an actress she would instantly be a librarian who writes books in her free time. Had her career in the film industry not been such a huge success, we would have found her in a library somewhere rummaging through tall stacks of books! We might still find her in such a state seeing as her love for books runs so deep.
3. She is a huge Godfather fan. The Godfather, arguably one of the best movies ever made, was based on the book by Mario Puzo of the same name and has become widely recognised the world over as the greatest movie of all time since its 1972 release. Sonam thinks it's one of the few book-to-movie adaptations that was done right and goes so far as to say the movie was amazing compared to the books. We're definitely not going to disagree!
4. All of the characters she has portrayed so far in her movies has stayed with Sonam. Something from each character has been left behind and has only added to her personality. But the character she connects with the most and had a blast playing was Milli from Khoobsurat. She was the closest to who Sonam is as a person, except for the fact that she has a very different style sense from Milli. But, of course!
5. She believes in destiny. Sonam doesn't believe in the 'X' factor. "I truly believe anybody is capable of doing anything. I feel like anybody can learn anything. I believe in destiny. There's a certain amount of luck involved," she says.
