Under the agreement, Qatar Cool will provide the development with 120,000 tonnes of refrigeration (TR) through district cooling for The Pearl-Qatar, using cutting edge technology to provide chilled water through an underground pipe network.

Qatar Cool, a joint venture between UDC (51 per cent) and the UAE’s Tabreed (44 per cent), with the remaining shares in private hands, recently began operating its first plant in the West Bay district of Doha. That is providing 30,000 TR and is currently developing a second plant which will provide an additional 37,000 TR. There are also a series of other projects that will be on-stream soon.

According to UDC officials, the cooling facilities for The Pearl-Qatar will create the world’s largest single district cooling plant ever constructed. “This is a very thrilling day for all of us at UDC, Qatar Cool and The Pearl-Qatar,” said Omar Alfardan, Chairman of Qatar Cool and Board member of UDC. “It is truly a win-win situation for all, as residents of The Pearl-Qatar will benefit from energy efficient air conditioning, but more importantly, the environment is a winner as we create a cleaner tomorrow."
