UAE footballers prepare for Gulf Cup challenge

DUBAI — UAE footballers carried out their final training session at Al Nahyan Stadium in Abu Dhabi before heading for Aden, Yemen on Sunday morning to take part in the 20th Gulf Cup scheduled in Aden and Abyan from November 22 to December 5.

The Slovenian head coach Srecko Katanec has shortlisted 24 players to carry the country’s hopes in the regional tournament in the absence of Al Wahda and the Olympic national team’s players.

The players are Majed Nasser, Saeed Al Kas, Maher Jasem, Rashid Eissa (Al Wasl), Mahmoud Al Mas (Sharjah), Subait Khater, Lhaled Sabeel, Sultan Bargash, Ahmed Jumaa (Al Jazira), Amer Mubarak (Al Nasr), Yousuf Jaber, Fahad Freish, Sultan Al Ghafri (Bani Yas), Saif Mohammed, Fares Jumaa, Mosallam Faiz, Ali Al Weihibi, Abdul Aziz Faiz, Mohammed Abdul Rahman, Fawzi Faiz (Al Ain), Waleed Abbas (Al Shabab), Obaid Al Taweela, Ismail Al Hammadi, Ahmed Khamis (Al Ahli).

The UAE coach has also called Al Jazira’s striker Ali mabkhout to replace Saif Mohammed in the national team’s shortlist and added Fadhel Mohammed to the squad to increase the number of players to 25 instead of 24 players who were originally shortlisted for the UAE campaign in the 20th Gulf Cup.

Meanwhile, the delegations of the Kuwaiti, Saudi and Iraqi national teams touched down at the Aden International Airport on Saturday.

The UAE delegation to the 20th Gulf Cup in Yemen headed for the Red Sea port city of Aden, the capital of former South Yemen under strict instructions from the management.
