An Ethiopian woman allegedly murdered her illegitimate one-month old baby, stuffed the body in a box and threw it off the Sharjah corniche, the police said on Tuesday. To make sure that the box sank, she put blocks of concrete inside before throwing it.
The woman, her lover and another woman who assisted her were arrested on Tuesday by the Sharjah Police.
According to the police, the mother, who is in her twenties, had an affair with a compatriot while she worked as a maid for an Emirati family.
She told the police he called off their relationship after learning that she was pregnant. She sought assistance from an African woman, who helped her deliver the child. The duo then killed the baby and dumped the body off the Heera Corniche.
In March, an Emirati notified the police about the body. The infant was declared brought-dead at Al Qasimi Hospital. An autopsy revealed that the child had been murdered. The police launched a manhunt to identify and arrest the baby's parents. Investigations led the police to the suspect. A DNA test established that she was the mother.
The woman told the police the baby's father lives and works in Dubai. He was arrested in coordination with the Dubai Police. He reportedly confessed to the police he was aware that the suspect was pregnant, but had no knowledge about the murder.
According to the police, the woman was staying in the country illegally after her maid's visa expired. The family which hired her had given her the air fare for her to fly back home. However, she stayed on in the UAE illegally and did part-time jobs.
Colonel Ibraheem Musbah, acting Director of Criminal Investigation Department at Sharjah Police, called on sponsors to cancel the visa of their employees at the end of their contract to ensure that they leave the country.
