DIVYA KHOSLA KUMAR started her career with Ab Tumhare Hawale Watan Saathiyo in 2004 with actors like Amitabh Bachchan, Akshay Kumar, and Bobby Deol. A year later, she got married and quit films. She then trained herself creatively for eight years before taking the role of director with Yaariyaan that was a box office hit. She is now back wearing the director's hat with Sanam Re. Excerpts from our conversation with Divya.
What does Sanam Re mean to you?
Sanam Re is a pure love story and it answers a lot of questions about love and finding your soul mate. It also questions finding your own happiness. We see a lot of rom coms these days but a pure love story like Yash Chopra used to make is very rare to find. And I am very inspired by him. So taking him as my inspiration I have tried to make a very pure love story.
Making a film is not an easy process, what were the challenges that you faced while shooting Sanam Re?
I just followed my destiny. I am from Delhi and I was doing modelling there and then I came to Mumbai and started acting. I did one film called Ab Tumhare Hawale Watan Saathiyoen with Akshay Kumar. Then I got married and learned cinematography and editing. For eight years I trained myself behind the scenes and I was also directing a lot of music videos. After that, I was very confident that I will be able to make a good film. so I started with Yaariyaan, it took me a lot of time to make that film. My husband was not so confident about my work at that time. It took me five years to make that film, even though I shot it in 2-3 months but the pre-production took five years. When the film released and became a hit, I was really encouraged. Then I started work on my second film. I think if we work hard then destiny also plays a very important role in it. Every film has a destiny of its own. Sometimes the story takes a film maker on a journey.
Do you miss being in front of the camera?
I have been too busy training myself as a creative person and understanding the technical aspect of film making. There has been a lot of growth in me. I acted in one film ten years back and people are still curious about my acting. I thought, this time, I will do a full stop on the question and do a dance number. So I did a special dance number in this film.
Yami just revealed to us that you are a tough task-master. Do you agree with this title?
Rather than being a tough task master, I would call myself a passionate director. I love cinema and I am a perfectionist. So I try to see that perfection in each and every department. I go completely prepared and organised on the sets. If anyone faulters or delays then that really annoys me and I become the tough task master!
