The Abu Dhabi Airports Company, or Adac, reported that 1.538 million passengers travelled through the airport, marking a significant growth compared to the same period in 2012.
Aircraft movement totalled 11,608, while cargo traffic also surged 29.9 per cent with more than 60,235 tonnes of cargo moved last month.
The top five destinations in August were Bangkok, London, Doha, Manila and Bahrain.
Eng Ahmad Al Haddabi, chief operations officer at Abu Dhabi Airports, attributed the robust growth in August to the busy Eid Al Fitr holidays and the beginning of the back-to-school season.
Dominique Hebert, general manager of Abu Dhabi’s Centro Capital Centre, agreed that thehotel’s business growth reflects the growth in passenger traffic, as reported by the Adac in its August statistics.
“It sure does. This growth in Abu Dhabi has the direct positive impact on the hospitality sector from many aspects,” he said. “Additionally, there are the exhibitions and activities at the Adnec [Abu Dhabi National Exhibition Centre] that are bringing in more people each year and this is shown by the demand that we receive on each fair,” the general manager said, whose property is located next to the Adnec.
As for the leisure market, Hebert said: “This has also seen a growth due to ongoing concerts at Yas Island in addition to the opening of Yas Water World, for instance.’’
Such activities and new openings, he said, were not only attracting tourists from Arab countries, but also from Europe and others. “So we can say that this growth is a complete growth and not only from one field with it; our business is growing too.”
Eng Al Haddabi said: “As passenger traffic continues to grow, Abu Dhabi International Airport will ensure optimal use of resources to cater to expected travel peaks and continue to deliver exceptional service on par with leading airports worldwide.”
On the Capacity Enhancement Programme, he said it will enable Abu Dhabi International Airport to accommodate more than 17 million annual passengers through strategic enhancements to existing facilities, the most recent of these being the new Arrivals Hall that opened last month.
Travellers are now able to access parking, taxis and limousines just 20 metres away from the customs lounge through the new tunnel connecting the customs area with the Arrivals Hall.
