On the back of the US emissions test story, Volkswagen may be riding out a turbulent storm at the moment. The badge is constantly in the news for less than desirable reasons. However, as yet, the incident only involves diesel engine models, which are not sold in the UAE.
As an unashamed fan of the marque, it is difficult to witness the international news surrounding the carmaker especially when they provide vehicles as enjoyable to drive and down to earth as the new Golf. The Golf has for decades been the final word in hatchbacks. Ruthlessly reliable, spacious for a small car and economical, the Golf epitomises the company's founding principle - providing automobiles for the people.
This new version is no different. Taking the TSI version around Dubai, it may not turn many heads when sat at the traffic lights alongside a 911 and 458 Italia, but that's not the point. If you're buying a Golf (aside from the sportier GTI versions), you're going for a well-built, well-performing car that won't let you down - not a flashy fly-by-night. The styling is sensible and functional. The small turbocharged 1.4-litre engine packs a mighty punch, given the car's weight has been reduced by 100kg. Perhaps one of the most fun aspects of the new Golf is its cornering abilities. This thing can turn on a sixpence. Its short bonnet and driver's position allow whoever's behind the wheel to really take command of the road, darting around like you're a character in Mario Kart (obviously while maintaining the strictest lane discipline).
Inside, functionality rules the roost. The seats are comfortable without being over the top. The central panel possesses a touch-screen and the car comes with audio parking assist but no cameras. However, with the car's dimensions, cameras would be a bit if a waste anyway. You can park the Golf anywhere with minimal fuss, slotting it into one of those pokey spots on a street in Bur Dubai or even around your apartment building on a Friday when it seems the entire country has come round to your neighbour's place for lunch.
The sound system is comprehensive and most models will come with an iPhone/Pod adaptor. The wheel houses much of the onboard controls you need at your fingertips and I particularly like the simple dashboard that accompanies the entire VW range.
In short, the Golf presents a solid, functional buy.
