Winners of Concrete Cube contest awarded

DUBAI - The prizes for the winners of the Concrete Cube Competition 2004, organised by Academia, were distributed by Abdullah AbdulRahman Al Shaibani, Assistant Director-General of Dubai Municipality for Technical Services at a special ceremony held last week at the Creek Sheraton Hotel.

The first prize of Dh 15,000 was bagged by Ahmed Al Harrasi, a student of the UAE University, who made a concrete cube with a compressive strength difference of 0.12 Mega Pascal.

The second prize of Dh 5,000 went to Adel Adeeb Azam, a Masters Degree student of UAE University with a compressive strength difference of 0. 21 MPa.

Faisal Abdul Wahab, a technician at UAE University was placed in the third position, Sulaiman Al Mulaifi of UAE University in the fourth and Abdullah Khamis Ali Al Shukeili of Sultan Qaboos University of Oman in the fifth place.

Each candidate was asked to bring two concrete cubes for compressive strength testing using a recently calibrated machine. A strength difference between the two cubes of 10MPa was targeted.

A jury comprising professionals from the Dubai Central Laboratory (DCL) and UAE University supervised the testing at the DCL compression machine. The Concrete Cube Competition, which has been going on since 1990 in the Civil Engineering Department at UAE University is now open to the public anywhere in the world. This year 45 candidates participated in the competition representing universities, contracting sector, consultants, and ready mix plants.

While there were 20 participants from the UAE University, three candidates came from Sultan Qaboos University of Oman and the rest were from Sharjah University, Higher Colleges of Technology, Dubai, American University of Sharjah, Unibeton, Star Mix, Juma Al Majid Products, Top Mix, Q Mix, and Arabian Trading Est.
