Whether it was horse racing or the professional golf and tennis circuits, the F1 powerboat races, the Rugby 7s, various water sports, soccer or simply the encouragement of physical activity through an impressive network of recreational sports facilities for the residents, Dubai has truly earned the right to host the first SportAccord Convention in the Middle East.

The accord is yet another important step in the emergence of Dubai as a centre for global sport and hosting sport leaders from around the world.

Khaleej Times is privileged to carry an interview with His Highness Shaikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice-President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, in today’s Sport section where he not only underscores the high priority given to sports per se but also indicates Dubai’s intent to keep at it unrelentingly and ensure that very soon it becomes a genuine contender for hosting the Olympic Games.

“We have a lot to offer,” said Shaikh Mohammed. “Dubai already has a well-developed infrastructure and a good track record of staging international sporting events, although admittedly not on the scale of the Olympic Games. In keeping with Olympic values, Dubai is home to people from many different nationalities and cultures who live in friendship and peace across the Emirate. There is a strong ‘can do’ culture here.”
