The UAE said on Thursday it has filed a complaint with the United Nations over Qatar's interception of two passenger planes en route to Bahrain this week.
Protests have been filed over "Qatar's threat to the lives of civilians through its interception of two UAE aircraft on a routine flight to Bahrain via internationally accredited airlines, and with all necessary approvals and permits", the official news agency Wam reported.
"This was irresponsible behaviour by the State of Qatar and an unjustifiable escalation and threat to the safety of civil flights in contravention of the applicable rules of international law, as well as endangering international peace and security in the region," the UAE note states.
The UAE requested that this document be registered among the official documents of both the Security Council and the General Assembly of the United Nations.
The UAE has also sent two similar memoranda to the secretary-general of the Arab League and the Secretary-General of the Gulf Cooperation Council, requesting that they be circulated to the member countries of both organisations as official documents.
The UAE on Monday said Qatari fighter jets had flown within 2,590 metres of two flights descending towards Bahrain's international airport.
Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Bahrain and Egypt cut all ties with Qatar in June over its ties to extremists and Iran.
Bahrain has also said it plans to file a complaint over Monday's incident to the International Civil Aviation Organisation, a specialised agency of the United Nations.
