The trio was crossing the road to the Dream Land Beach while a speeding car driven by a Pakistani national knocked them down.
The vehicle ran over one of the teenagers who died on the spot.
Captain Seif Salem Zayed, head of the Traffic Department at Al Salmah Police Station, said the speed of the vehicle and the inattentiveness of the teenagers while crossing the highway at a no-crossing area were the reasons of the accident.
He noted that the police immediately reached the scene after getting the information and shifted both the injured teenagers to a government hospital in Umm Al Quwain.
The driver had been detained and would be transferred to the Public Prosecution.
Captain Zayed urged motorists to avoid speeding, which is the cause of majority of the accidents in the UAE.
He also called on pedestrians to make sure that they cross the roads at pedestrian crossing areas and to pay attention to the traffic before crossing the roads. — ismail@khaleejtimes.com
