Speaking to Khaleej Times, Dr Fawzeya Saeed Badri, Executive Director of Education Affairs at the MoE, said the students who wish to study from their homes can contact the educational zones to apply before this deadline.

According to the MoE’s statistics, 13,376 people had applied for home schooling across the country during the 2007-08 academic year, including 7,276 female students of different nationalities. The students will attend the final examinations of the two terms with the students of the public schools, but in the afternoon. “The home schooling students will learn the same curricula but they need not attend classes at schools,” said Dr Badri.

They could receive books from the distribution centres closest to the students’ residences and start self-study at home. According to the ministry’s terms, the applicants need to pay only Dh150 for books.

Mohammad Salim Al Dhaheri, Director of the Abu Dhabi Education Zone (ADEZ), said, “The conditions are clear. Everyone who applies for the course must abide by its rules.”

The documents to be enclosed with the application are the pass certificate of last academic year or officially attested certificates issued from abroad, and a confirmation letter from the education zone to show that the applicant is not enrolled in any of the schools.

Moreover, the applicants should submit four passport-size photographs, the birth certificate (for expatriates), and a copy of the passport stamped with the residence visa. The applicant who works must submit a letter from his/her employer confirming no-objection on continuing studies.

Saleh Abu Mahmoud, Coordinator of Adult Education and Home Schooling at the ADEZ, said the home schooling system allows the students to study only from Grade 7 to 12, as per ministerial decision No. 3148 of 2008.

“Students applying to join Grade 11 must submit attested pass certificates of Grades 9 and 10 and those applying to join Grade 12 must submit attested pass certificates of Grades 9, 10 and 11,” he added. The ministerial decision has fixed the age limit for students applying to join each grade as follows: Grade 7 — 15 years or above; Grade 8 — 16 years or above; Grade 9 — 17 years or above; Grade 10 — 18 years or above; Grade 11 — 19 years or above; Grade 12 — 20 years or above.
