A stone crushing plant in Fujairah has been ordered to be shut down temporarily after it was found violating several rules. The shut-down order will be in effect for a month.
The closure was ordered after the Ministry of Environment and Water’s Verification Unit paid a surprise visit to the plant and other factories in Fujairah’s Thoban area.
The personnel of the unit observed a cloud of thick dust emanating from some parts of the stone crushing plant. The plant was not equipped with the necessary rubber curtains on the front side, and the operation areas were not sprayed with water.
According to a report by the inspection team, the main feeding unit was equipped with an ordinary but ineffective so-called “wet dust braking system”. Other shortcomings noted in the report include unavailable illumination in the quarry. The site failed to meet the necessary health and public safety standards, and the dust-gauging equipment to monitor air pollution was unavailable. The violations constitute infringements of both cabinet and ministerial resolutions regulating work of stone crushing factories, quarries and product transportation, as well planning, operating and execution in the field of quarrying and stone crushing.
Acting on the findings of the team, the stone crushing plant had been suspended for a month to rectify the irregularities. It is not allowed to resume working unless its status is rectified as per the conditions set by the ministry.
