It is also considering a fine of Dh500 for dud cheques of rentees in addition to Dh100 fine against suspended cheques offered as advanced rent instalment, the source said.
The proposals are before an ad hoc committee of the department and a decision is expected soon. The department is looking at streamlining its operations through these new levies. It wants to discourage delay in renewing the contracts that affects the interests of the department and proprietors. Currently, the fine for delay in renewing the rent contract is a meagre Dh100 per month, which does not deter the rentees from delaying the renewal.
The department is also considering reducing the grace period given for renewing contract from one month to two weeks.
The source said the committee is of the view that the grace period for delay in paying rent should be one week, instead of one month, after which power would be disconnected. If the tenant fails to give sufficient reason for the delay during this period, the building’s watchman would be instructed to discontinue power to the flat.
