The Sharjah Police received 29 drowning reports since 2016 till June 30 this year and they rescued 24 people, while five died.
This was revealed by Major Faisal Passim Al-Dukhi, acting head of the Department of Traffic and Patrol Department of Sharjah Police. He pointed out that the drowning cases took place because the victims didn't take safety and preventive measures, including swimming in prohibited and dangerous places, and ignoring instructions issued by authorities.
He said that Sharjah Police are always seeking to enhance security and safety in the swimming facilities offered. He pointed out that the rescue department is working hard to provide an integrated system for beach safety by deploying patrol teams, and implementing a marine mechanism. It has the best equipment for marine rescue, including six large rescue boats containing primary aid kits, oxygen gas cylinders and medical equipment needed to carry out the initial rescue operation, as well as seven rubber boats, and three Jet Bots for rapid intervention, and eight water bicycles for beach search and control, he added.
Meanwhile, the Sharjah Police have launched an awareness campaign - in collaboration with Department of Information - to educate people visiting Mamzar Lake in Sharjah. It aims to sensitize the public - both young and old - on the importance of taking precautions and following instructions while adhering to regulations when visiting beaches.
The campaign will go on for a month and lectures will be held in Al Hamriya and the Eastern Province. During the drive, 40,000 attractive brochures designed in the form of 'life jackets' will be distributed to the people.
