Security in place

RAS AL KHAIMAH - The increased inflow of people into Aawfi leads to problems like traffic jams, accidents and fires which have on many occasions inconvenienced visitors. Crimes including thefts, fighting and violent behaviours especially among youngsters have also been on the rise.

Major Marwan Abdullah Al Mansoori, Head of the Public Relations and Moral Guidance Department at Ras Al Khaimah Police said more patrols and officers have been deployed to control the traffic and to curb the violations. He stressed that they are expecting thousands of visitors during the Awafi annual festival.

Al Mansoori noted that the police station established in the area last year will provide comprehensive security and social services to the visitors. Also, more traffic patrol vehicles will be pressed into service to enable the smooth movement of traffic. More ambulances and rescue teams will also be put in place. Mustafa Abul-Qadar, an Emirati resident of Awafi said there is need for more security in the area to guarantee the safety and security of the tourists.

Sulaiman Othman, a Palestinian expert in RAK said he always camped in the Awafi desert area with his family during the holidays and on the weekends.

He noted that a police patrols and security officers are present in the area to maintain safety and security especially in the evening but he called up on the authorities to extend the patrol of the area to late in the night as some families enjoy camping in the deserts till dawn. Major Al Mansoori has urged motorists, especially the youth, to be disciplined and to drive carefully while in the Awafi desert area.
