This was proved in the recent inspection surveys carried out by the inspectors of the Consumer Protection Unit on the various commercial outlets. It showed that 31 per cent of the products on sale were fake and expired products, 27 per cent were pirated products of famous brands and 42 per cent of the products found were against Islamic teachings.
Saleh Hamad Al Shamsy, Deputy Director General of the Department of Economic Development said that customers and buyers should be aware of the fact that some shops were still dealing in fake products, which is against the country’s laws.
Since January 2008, the department has seized huge quantities of both pirated and fake products from nearly 4,000 stores across the emirate, said Al Shamsy.
“During this year, we have intensified inspection campaigns and we have chalked out new strategies to deal with the errant traders including confiscating their trade licences and imposing heavy fines on them, as this would help root out the phenomenon in the emirate,” he said.
He called on the public to and check expiry dates before buying goods. On Wednesday, the DED asked residents who had purchased shoes which used religion as a sales gimmick, to return them to the shop and get reimbursements.
