Islamabad: The Pakistan People's Party (PPP) and Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaaf (PTI) have agreed to coordinate their positions on national issues as combined opposition in the National Assembly.
The decision was taken at a meeting between delegations of the two parties here, the PPP led by Syed Khurshid Shah and PTI by Shah Mehmood Qureshi.
Speaking to media representatives after the meeting, Leader of the Opposition in the National Assembly Khurshid Shah said that both sides also agreed to approach other opposition parties in the assembly as well for forming a united front and a joint opinion on different views.
"We will talk about non-compliance by the government of its commitments on various issues and violations of rules," he said, adding that a monthly briefing on progress in electoral reforms committee will also be held regularly.
Speaking on the occasion, PTI Vice-President Shah Mehmood Qureshi said the opposition should have unified stance on matters of national interest in parliament.
He said the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) government was not fulfilling its constitutional responsibilities on vital national issues.
Qureshi vowed to table a joint-resolution in the National Assembly over non-issuance of NFC award and holding of regular meetings of Council of Common Interests (CCI), a constitutional body designed to protect the rights of provinces.
The PTI leader went on to say that decision taken at the all parties conference (APC) were not being implemented over China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC).
Qureshi said the government appeared all set to impose fresh taxes totaling Rs49 billion under pressure from the International Monetary Fund (IMF). It was decided to offer tough resistance to these plans.
