SHARJAH — The Sharjah Commerce and Tourism Development Authority (SCTDA) on Sunday revealed a spectacular array of water-themed shows and entertaining activities lined up for the much-awaited Sharjah Water Festival 2010 (SWF), set to take place between December 2 and 11 at Al Majaz Waterfront and Khalid Lagoon.
The announcement was made during a press conference held at the Corniche Al Buhairah Hotel.
The Festival, organised by the SCTDA under the patronage of His Highness Shaikh Sultan bin Mohamed bin Sultan Al Qasimi, Crown Prince and Deputy Ruler of Sharjah, has become a prominent annual event on Sharjah’s tourism calendar. It includes a variety of top-notch activities and international shows, and culminates in the UIM F1H2O World Championship 2010, Grand Prix of Sharjah. Its popularity has grown over the years, attracting over 170,000 visitors annually.
SCTDA Chairman Shaikh Sultan bin Ahmed Al Qasimi, stressed that Sharjah leads the way in hosting premier international entertainment and sporting events, emphasising its leading position on the global tourism map.
Coinciding with UAE’s 39th National Day celebration, the SWF is an iconic event that reflects the emirate’s love for the sea. This year’s SWF activities include the theatre of physical comedy and circus arts (Aga boom), the Sinbad diving show and the heritage village.
There will also be a children’s play area, children’s entertainment shows at Mouj Island, Mouj ‘Meet & Greet’, pirate shows, pet show and puppet shows, The Black theatre shows, water and sand games, team community games, carnival parades and National Day carnival parades are added attractions.
Al Qasimi noted that Sharjah sees dynamic cultural and artistic entertainment throughout the year.
Over the past few years, the SCTDA has organised a number of promotional campaigns, including road shows across GCC countries, to highlight these festivals and their importance in attracting more tourists. The SWF mascot, Mouj, recently toured 20 schools across Sharjah to promote the Festival and acquaint children with its entertainment activities.
The UIM F1H2O World Championship 2010, Grand Prix of Sharjah which is in its 11th successive year will be held at Sharjah’s Khalid Lagoon. It is the largest annual water sports event in the region, and has contributed to the emirate’s reputation as the event’s best organiser.
To date, Sharjah has won the ‘Best Organiser Award’ for the event five times as well as the World Journalism Award for the best organisation of the event in 2001.
While Dana Gas is the main sponsor of SWF, other sponsors are Al Qasba, Sharja h Sea Ports and Customs, Sharjah Museums Department, Sharjah Electricity and Water Authority (SEWA), Sharjah Municipality, Sharjah Police, Department of Public Works, Al Zahra Hospital, Zulal, Sharjah Theatre Group, Mega Mall Sharjah, Sahara Centre, Golden Tulip Hotel and Corniche Al Buhairah Hotel.
Al Qasimi highlighted the major role played by the sponsors in this year’s and previous festivals, and their contribution to the success of the SWF.
